Juveniles ‘Playing Pranks’ Killed Federally Convicted Bank Robber In PA: DA

Two juveniles who were "playing pranks" on Matthew Hill, a federally convicted bank robber, fatally stabbed him during a struggle inside a Lancaster home, but no charges will be filed, the Lancaster County District Attorney’s Office announced on Wednesday, March 6.

Hill, 40, was stabbed in the chest during an altercation inside a home on the first block of West Farnum Street on Jan. 24, according to prosecutors. Investigators determined the stabbing was accidental, and the juvenile responsible will not face charges, authorities said.

Hill had been drinking at a bar earlier that evening and returned to the home intoxicated with a female resident, police said. While he slept on the couch, two juveniles, both under 14, repeatedly dumped water on him as a prank while holding kitchen knives, prosecutors said.

When Hill woke up, he became angry and began physically assaulting one of the juveniles, slamming their head against a wall and punching them in the back, investigators said. The second juvenile attempted to intervene, hitting Hill and spraying him with cleaning solution, police said.

Hill allegedly chased the second juvenile into the kitchen, punching and stomping on them. The juvenile, still holding the knife, unknowingly stabbed Hill in the chest during the struggle, according to prosecutors.

The woman attempted to take Hill to a hospital, but he refused to go inside, authorities said. He returned to the home, and 911 was called hours later for a complaint of back pain. First responders discovered Hill’s stab wound upon arrival, but he died at the scene at 6:37 a.m., officials said.

Hill’s death was initially ruled a homicide, but after reviewing the investigation, prosecutors determined the stabbing was unintentional and would not result in criminal charges.

Hill was released from federal prison in June 2024 after serving time for armed bank robbery and was facing multiple pending cases at the time of his death, including theft and DUI charges, court records show.

The case is now closed, prosecutors said.
